Independence, Missouri: Madge Clara (Owen) Niece formally of Beach, North Dakota passed away on Monday, December 12, 2011 at her home in Independence. A Vigil service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Beach. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Beach with Rev. Father Russell Kovash officiating. Interment will be held at 3:00 P.M. (CST) on Thursday, December 22, 2011 in the North Dakota State Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, North Dakota. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Madge was born on March 1, 1921, to Leonard E. and Edith (Horsfall) Owen in Anaconda, Montana. She attended Anaconda public schools, graduating in 1939. While in high school, she was the editor of the high school year book and was a member of the Northwestern Orchestra as a first violinist. She attended Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana and Western Montana College in Dillon, Montana, earning her teaching degree. She taught in Libby, Montana, and Bozeman.
Madge married Joseph L. Niece in Beach, North Dakota, on September 25, 1943. They lived in Rapid CIty, South Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Helena Montana, moving to Beach in 1947, where she continued to make her home for 60 years.
Madge worked at the Beach High School in the office from 1961 to 1967. In the fall of 1967, she began teaching at Home on the Range for Boys until she retired in 1981.
Madge was a member of the Beach Park Board for many years. She was a 63-year member of Chapter C, P.E.O., serving as president and also co-chairman of the Northwest State P.E.O. Convention. After Joe¬'s death, Madge was baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Beach and has remained a member since.
Madge was preceded in death by her husband Joe, daughter, Pat, and grandson Art.
She is survived by three daughters, Judy (Al) Tibor, Independence, Sally (John) Witkowski, Wibaux, Montana, Kerry Niece, Independence; one son, Bob (Nona) Niece of Beach; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
