Elizabeth Ann Broad was the third child and eldest daughter of Isaac and Joanna (Marks) Broad. She married Banfield Gilbert on June 25, 1864 in Towednack; together, they had at least eight children.

Surviving were her sons William George and Frank James Gilbert, as well as her daughters Elizabeth Jane and a second Joanna Gilbert.
