Fred Clyde Nelson, 92, of Idaho Falls, died September 13, 2008 at Idaho Falls Health & Rehabilitation.

He was born October 1, 1915, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the oldest son of Fred W. Nelson and Adele Pearl Bird Nelson.

Fred graduated from Granite High School in 1935 and was active in boxing, baseball, and football. In 1936, he hitchhiked to California and worked in a lumber camp in Westwood, Lassen County, for Red River Lumber Company with 2 Fisher brothers also from Salt Lake City. After a year, he moved to Los Angeles and went to school at USC,UCLA and Frank Wiggins Trade School where he learned to build airplanes. He worked for Vultee Aircraft for 5 years as a pattern maker building 10,000 basic trainers and then on to Northrop on the Black Widow and flying wing aircraft. When World War II ended, he went to work in the motion picture industry as a carpenter and in special effects for 25 years. He retired from the motion picture industry and moved his family to Idaho Falls where he worked as a union carpenter on dams, buildings, and at the Idaho National Laboratory. He was a member of the Local 808 United Brotherhood of Carpenters until his retirement.

In 1938, he married Vary Loraine Bird and they had four children. They later divorced. In 1968, he married Naomi Allene Perry in Idaho Falls and they had two children.

Fred was active in the LDS Church and was involved in many church programs. Fred was always helping those in need and often put others before himself.

He enjoyed fishing and working on his and others' home projects.

Fred is survived by his sons: Clyde (Karen) Nelson of Valencia, California; Charles (Connie) Nelson of Sun Valley, California; Kingsley (Mimi) Nelson of Glendale, Utah; and Mark Perry Nelson of Idaho Falls; daughters: Claudia Jean McCracken of Cortez, Colorado and Melissa Marie (Kevin) Powers of Ogden, Utah; 26 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard (Joyce) Nelson and a sister, Helene Neff both of Salt Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Vary, and his wife, Allene Nelson; brothers, Frank and Stan Nelson; and a sister, Marge Chambers.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to-12:30 p.m. at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls.
