Pope. His original name was Gebhard. He was known for being very inteligent. In 1042 he became Bishop of Eichstätt, a postition he held until his death. In 1050 he became the chancellor of Emperor Heinrich III. The tow men developed a close friendship. Both Emperor and Gebhard were reluctant to accept Gebhards nomination for papacy but in 1055 Heinrich changed his mind and convinced Gebhard to become pope. He was enthrone on April 13 1055. He held a council in Florence in which he condemned clerical marriages and simony. In 1056 he went to Germany and was welcomed by Heinrich. He followed Heinrich on a hunting trip to Bodfeld where Heinrich suddenly died in October 1056. Victor recommended the noblemen to elect Heinrichs six year old son for King and Emperor. Victor became the childs guardian and main advisor to Heinrichs wife Agnes. He wielded enomous powers which he didn't misuse. He only used it to maintain the peace throughout the empire and to strengthen the papacy against agressors. Victor crowned Heinrich IV. in Aachen before he returned to Rome in February. He announced a council and went to Arezzo for it. He suddenly became ill and died. He was supposed to be buried in Eichstätt but his body was stolen by the people of Ravenna and buried in Santa Maria Rotonda the Mausoleum of Theodoric the Great. He was the fifth of seven german popes. He reigned for 2 years, 3 months and 12 days. (bio by: Lutetia)
