Robert Leland Dow, age 77, of La Plata, MD passed away 4 Dec 2011 at Quail Run Assisted Living, Perry Hall, MD of complication's due to Huntington's Disease.
Robert was born to Norman Dressel Dow and Norma Christine (Slawson) Dow.
He was predeceased by his wife Catherine (Kellar) Dow, sister Margaret (Dow) Johnson and brother Norman Dow.
He is survived by sons John (Donata) of Indian Head, MD, Mike (Margaret Anne) of Caldwell, NC, daughter Nancy Dow (Michael Curley) in Singapore, and five grandchildren: Robert and Katherine Dow, and Hannah, Brendan and Jonathan Curley. His niece and nephew Sandy (Johnson) Lozier and Marty Johnson reside in Omaha, NE.
He was a 1957 graduate of University of Texas Austin, where he obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering as a midshipman in the Naval ROTC program. Upon graduation in 957, Ensign Dow was assigned to the Naval Ordnance Test Station (NOTS) at China Lake, CA. In 1960 he entered a civilian career at NOTS, where he was project engineer on various weapons development programs. He was Navy lead engineer for development of the Joint binary chemical bomb, the BLU-80 "Bigeye", and testified before Congress during its development. In 1978 he transferred to the Naval EOD Facility in Indian Head, MD, where he led a team that traveled worldwide destroying aging 7.5 ton BLU-82B "daisy cutter" bombs left over from the Vietnam War. In 1981, Robert transferred to the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground where he worked on smoke obscurants. He returned to the Naval EOD facility in 1987 and retired in 1989.
Robert was a "do-it-yourselfer" who loved cats, dogs and gardening. He enjoyed his years in California, where he took his family on jeep trips through the Mojave desert. He was a wise, loving father and will be sorely missed by his family.
