OTTUMWA - Linda Bloom, 62, of Marshalltown, formerly of Ottumwa, entered into eternal life Dec.13, 2011, in her home with her loving family at her side and under the care of Iowa River Hospice after a courageous year long battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.
Linda was born Sept. 12, 1949, the daughter of Richard and Mary(Lewis)Ackley in Iowa City. In June of 1971, Linda was united in marriage to Michael W. Bloom. This past summer, they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.
Linda was raised in the Ottumwa area, graduating from Ottumwa High School in 1967. She continued her education, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. During her four years at Iowa, she was a Delta Gamma and served as chapter president her senior year. She earned a Master of Education degree in 1978.
Linda was passionate about many things, including her family, her friends and all the kids she has coached for the last 25 years. Most especially, she loved playing golf, spending summer vacations at Lake Okoboji and scuba-diving in Bonaire.
Linda was a professor at Cornell College for two years, teaching P.E., kinesiology and physiology. She also taught elementary P.E. and was a high school girls basketball coach for two years in Sioux City. Linda moved to Marshalltown in 1977 and was a professor at MCC for over 15 years. She taught health, exercise physiology, wellness and other related courses. During her tenure, she was the men's golf coach and the cheerleading sponsor for several years. Linda was also instrumental in starting the wellness program at MMSC.
Linda was a member of Marshalltown Assistance League, serving as president and chairman of the First Time Follies in 1986, PEO, Meals on Wheels, the committee that organized and raised money for the initial phase of the bike trail, the YWCA Board of Directors, Hawthorne Club, Souvenir Club, WIN Club, Elmwood Country Club and the First United Methodist Church. In 2011 she was named Outstanding Woman You Should Know, sponsored by Intuition Magazine.
Linda coached girls swimming at Marshalltown High School for 24 years, girls golf for 12 years and coached summer swim team for over 25 years. She was the National High School Athletic Coaches Association's Swim Coach of the Year in 2005, Regional Coach of the Year more than 13 times, was the 1993 Iowa State Swimming Coach of the Year and her team was state runner-up twice. Linda spearheaded collaboration efforts to add seats to the new Y pool and in 2011 the pool was renamed the Linda Bloom Natatorium. Linda was a IGHSAU Board member from 2004-11. As part of this role, she was instrumental in bringing the Iowa High School Girls state swim meet to Marshalltown. Linds's team won a state golf championship in 2005, and she was Iowa Coach of the Year that same year. Her teams finished in second place twice. She received the Golden Plaque of Distinction -Superiative Iowa presented by the IGHSAU at the state golf meet in June 2011.
Linda will be dearly missed by her husband, Michael; her two daughters Anne(Lane)Grigg and Katie; her two grandchildren, Richard and Elizabeth; her two sisters, nancy Menke and Amy Maris and their families; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She joins in eternal life her parents; and her grandparents, Myron and Lucille Ackley and Jessie and Riley Lewis.
Linda donated her body for medical research to the University of Iowa. A celebration of Life service for Linda will be 2 pm Friday at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm this evening with a 7 pm prayer service at the church. The family wishes to thank all those who helped and supported Linda during her journey this past year. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Linda may be directed to YM/YWCA Heritage Club or Marshalltown Community School District Foundation for the benefit for the Linda Bloom Scholarship Fund.
