In her early life she lived in Iowa in a log cabin near the Turkey River. She soon had two sisters and a brother. When Susie was seven or eight the family left their comfortable log cabin and moved to the Dakotas in wagons pulled by horses or mules. It was a difficult long trip and when they arrived in the Dakotas life was hard. They lived in their wagons until sod houses could be built. She had one son Peder K Olson that her mother Bergit raised for her due to ill health. Her son was named for his father Peder Erickson. They were unable to marry due to Susie's health.
