He was a Winnipeg Fireman, who contracted frostbite of both feet and legs, after fighting a major fire in downtown Winnipeg in December, 1907. He died less than a month later.
The Winnipeg Fire Museum did not have him listed on their "Last Alarm" page. I was able to provide them with the evidence necessary to include John Henry Stewart, as well as several other early Winnipeg Firemen, on their list of people who died in the line of duty while protecting Winnipeg.
He is now listed on their website.
His infant son, James Chesley Stewart, died less than a month aftetr his father and is also buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
His wife, Mary Ann (Marie) Black was the elder sister of the wife of Jack's younger brothers (Peter Norman Stewart) wife, Ethel Martha Black.
Following the death of her first husband, and her child, Marie Black moved to Vancouver, BC, where she married her 2nd cousin, Alexander Foulds.
