He was the first jockey to win nine races in a single day. His career 19,719 mounts resulted in 3,480 wins compiling earnings of $9.2 million. He was a two-time Kentucky Derby winner but is remembered most for his ride aboard Charismatic in 1999 when after winning the Derby and the Preakness narrowly missed being a triple crown winner by finishing third at Belmont. The horse had sustained a broken leg during the race. At the young age of 34, he was found dead at his Pasadena, California residence. His death was considered a homicide by officials until investigation proved he had died from a fall during which he sustained a serious head injury. His body was transported to Elloree, a small town in South Carolina he considered his hometown.
