Kenneth Arl "Abe" Smith, 90, of Grinnell died Thursday, June 14, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Casket bearers were Michelle Sisson, Cindy Strobel, Greg, Jeff and Tim Criswell; Angie Freeborn; Kaye Cantrell; Deana Jochims; Art Butcher; and Alicia Schultz. Members of the Grinnell American Legion conducted military rites. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery. The son of George and Mary Cecile Farmer Smith, he was born Nov. 1, 1910 in Washington Township near Searsboro. He was raised in the Searsboro area and was a 1931 graduate of Searsboro High School. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Aug. 22, 1932 he was married to Pauline Vincent in Kahoka, Mo. They lived in California and Texas for a few years prior to returning to Searsboro. Mr. Smith worked a carpenter and later was employed as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1978 and moved to Grinnell in 1999. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Rural Mail Carriers Association. Survivors are three daughters, Rowena Porter of Grinnell, Kennetha Criswell of Searsboro and Georgia Butcher of New Sharon; three brothers, George Jr. of Grinnell, Lyle "Swede" of Bellflower, Calif. and Gene "Toby" of Grinnell; two sisters, Peggy Armstrong of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Norma Burkett of Newburg; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Searsboro Community Center.
