World War II Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and served as a Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company A, 34th Infantry, 24th Infantry Division. Near Capoocan Leyte, Philippine Islands, on November 3, 1944, he was an assistant squad leader in an attack against enemy positions on both sides of a stream running through a wooded gulch. When his squad leader was killed, he took command and started to lead his men across the stream, but was severely wounded by machinegun fire. He continued to signal to his squad as he directed it in the destruction of 2 enemy machineguns and numerous riflemen. The remaining Japanese concentrated the full force of their firepower upon him, and he was killed while still urging his men on. His determination and self-sacrifice aided in the successful completion of his squad's mission. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on February 11, 1946. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
