Jerry Ratliff was born Frank Leone Ratliff in Tallula, Illinois. Sometime after the 1920 census where he was listed as Frank L. Ratliff, he replaced his middle name Leone with his nickname "Jerry" and was Jerry Ratliff from then on. Jerry didn't move on to San Francisco with the rest of his family because of an accounting job that transferred him to Fresno, California in the 1920s.
In 1946, Jerry Ratliff joined his mother Carrie, sister Nina Mardel, and brother-in-law, Richard Lutz in purchasing Home Creek Resort located at Huntington Lake, California high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Fresno County. Eventually he and his sister ended up as partners in the enterprise.
He wrote detective stories and even had a few published. He also published a fishing guide every week under the nom de plume, Home Creek Ike. He was a big fan of President Eisenhower.
He loved to go fly-fishing, and when he wasn't fishing he was tying his own flies. He thought everyone should know how to tie flies, so he taught his grand kids, his nephew, and most of his young summer employees how to tie flies. He often went fishing on the mid afternoon breaks he took. He was first to open the store and restaurant at 6 am and closed everything down at 9 pm.
It was during one of his mid-afternoon breaks that he had a massive heart attack while taking a nap in what the family called the home cabin. That's where they all lived when the resort was open during the summer. He died in the place he loved best. That doesn't happen to many people.
