Robert Mathew Reed, 84, Carthage, died at 4:07 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at McCune Brooks Hospital, Carthage.
He served on a ship in the Pacific after joining the Navy in 1945, then worked in coal mines in West Virginia and Illinois. After moving to Carthage, he worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Carthage First Baptist Church.
Mr. Reed was married to Evelena Dotson. In 1969, he married Alma Carol Henson. She survives, along with his four daughters, Diane Reed, Carrollton, Texas, Kathi Jones, Carthage, Tracy Ryan, Atlantic, Iowa, and Debbie Miller, San Diego, Calif.; a son, Tom Pitt, Mt. Vernon; a brother, Jim Reed, Brownsburg, Ind.; a sister, Kathleen Jordan, Charleston, W. Va.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles W. Reed; a brother; and three sisters.
Private services will be held at a later date.
