ABINGDON -- Lawrence J. "Larry" Hickey, 76, of 401 Knox Highway 5 died at 5:27 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 1995, in the emergency room at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
Born July 27, 1918, near Lake Bracken, Knox County, to John William and Jane Coats Hickey, he married Geraldine Patricia Burton on Sept. 11, 1937, in Indiana. She died in 1974.
He later married Pearl K. Groth Ackerman on Aug. 30, 1975, in Davenport, Iowa. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Michael K. Cushing of Bloomington; two daughters, Janet Homler of Georgia and Mary K. Mason of East Galesburg; two stepdaughters, Dixie Roe of Granite City and Carol Storjohann of Blue Grass, Iowa; two sisters, Helen Flynn of DeLong and Jeanne Whitsitt of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
He had farmed in the Abingdon area since 1958. He also was a carpenter for many years.
A World War II Marine Corps veteran, with rank of master sergeant, he was a member of American Legion Post 381. He also was a member of Abingdon Fall Festival Association. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where services will be at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Francis Oman will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by his American Legion post. Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Fall Festival Association, Future Farmers of America or his church.
