Edwin E. Campbell, 86, of Columbus passed away at 11:20 a.m., December 10, 2011, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Care Facility.
Mr. Campbell was born in Indianapolis March 8, 1925 to Frank and Della Bless Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
In June of 1946, he married Barbara Pennington, to whom he was married for 65 years. He was a 1942 graduate of Columbus High School. Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1950, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Franklin College where he belonged to Phi Alpha Theta honorary fraternity.
He retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1990, working the final 12 years of his career in the Denver Division Office.
Ed was an avid reader who especially enjoyed books on American history and religion. Discussing his latest read with fellow book enthusiasts always pleased him.
He was a tireless community volunteer. He was past president and charter member of the Meridian Kiwanis Club. He was also past president of the Columbus Chapter of Toastmasters International. He served as scoutmaster of the Boy Scout Troop 560 and was a member of the local Boy Scout Council. For several years he acted as a tour guide for the Columbus Visitors Center, and as a board member of Just Friends Adult Day Services. Ed served on the board of directors of the Tipton Lakes Community Association and also on the board of the Harrison Lakes Town Meeting. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served on various boards and was past chairman of the Church Council. For his extensive contribution to the community, he was recognized as Bartholomew County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2000,and Indiana Senior Citizen of the Year in 2001.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Susan (Steve)Foster of Lakewood, Colorado; granddaughter, Laura (Adam) Huff of Denver, Colorado; and grandson, Joel (Amy) Allison of Columbus.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 3300 Fairlawn Drive, Columbus, with Dr. Daniel Cash officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Foundation; Hospice of South
Central Indiana, 2626 E. 17th Street Columbus, Indiana 47201; or Just Friends Adult Day Services, 900 Lindsay Street Columbus, Indiana 47201. Inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date.
