Birth: 1675
Surry County
Virginia, USA
Death: 1730
Chowan County
North Carolina, USA

UPDATED 01/21/2012

************************************************************

Married 1696 in Surry Co., VA to Elizabeth Unknown.

Their issue:

1. Edward Henry Welch (1700-1753)
2. John Edwards Welch (1705-?)
3. James Welch (1710-?)
4. Sarah Elizabeth Welch (1715-?)

************************************************************

At the time they migrated into Chowan District, North Carolina English Royal Crown Colony, it comprised a much larger area than it does today. Pretty much everything west into Indian Territory & south to Beaufort Co. It has, of course, been chopped up into many counties. It seems the area they settled is still today in Chowan County.

from A Suppliment to the Welch Journal:

On July 1715 a Patrick Laughley proves in court his right to be granted a certain number of acres of land for importing into Chowan precinct John Welch, wife Elizabeth and sons John, Jr. & Edward. (In other words, Patrick Laughley was given land because he paid for the cost of transporting the Welch family into Chowan precinct.)

In 1715 John Welch "as evidence on behalf of the Soverign Lord ye King" was summoned to the court of Chowan Precinct as a witness to a hog stealing.

Between 1715 & 1722 John Welch buys land joining Stumpy Creek.

In 1722 John Welch is a witness to a deed by signing his mark. He could not write.

In January 1722 John Welch buys land from James Maglohan.

John Welch died in 1730 & leaves a will. It names the following children: eldest daughter Sarah, eldest son Edward, son John, Jr. & son James. The will also names his wife Elizabeth & son Edward as executors.

In 1737 Sarah Welch Parker & husband Joseph petition for Joseph Parker to be given admin. of John Welch's estate. Elizabeth is dead & Sarah & Joseph accuse Edward of embezzelment of the estate. Joseph Parker is granted admin.
