Born in New York City, entered the service at Orange County, New York and served as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, 112th Cavalry Regimental Combat Team. Near Afua, New Guinea, July 23, 1944, he was ordered to relieve another unit surrounded by Japanese forces. He worked his squad up to a position in order to close in with the enemy when a volley of hand grenades fell between him and the men following. Realizing that the explosion would kill or wound his men, he promptly threw himself upon the grenade deliberately sacrificing his life to save those of his men. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on April 7, 1945. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
