Singer. Born Myra Jardine Taylor, she was premier swing singer on the jazz scene for over seven decades. Her career as a singer began in the early 1930s in Kansas City, where she performed along with musicians such as Big Joe Turner, Pete Johnson, Bennie Moten, Lester Young, Jimmy Rushing and Count Basie. In 1937, she moved to Chicago, where she worked and toured the mid-west with jazz greats Warren "Baby" Dodds, Lonnie Johnson, Roy Eldridge and Lil' Hardin Armstrong. She returned to Kansas City in the 1940s, joined Harlan Leonard and His Rockets recording the hit tunes "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" (1941) and "The Spider and the Fly" (1946), her best known song. She also toured in USO shows during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as performing in 32 different countries into the late 1960s. In 1977, she settled in southern California and did some acting as the character Pearl on the TV sitcom "The Jeffersons". She also appeared in the films "Scoring" (1979), "Suspect" (1987), "Once Around" (1991) and "The Paper" (1994). Resuming her singing career in the mid 1990s, she became a member of the Wild Women of Kansas City vocal group which was a regular in nightclubs and recorded her final album "My Night to Dream" (2001). Taylor's final performance was with the Wild Women of Kansas City at age 94, at Jardine's nightclub in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 24, 2011. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
