He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Spr Bond died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, of wounds sustained on December 6 in the Deh Adham Khan region of Nahr-e Saraj (North) in central Helmand province when he was injured in a blast from an improvised explosive device. He was evacuated by helicopter to the military hospital in Camp Bastion and then to the UK.
Aged 24, he grew up in St Austell, Cornwall and joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in August 2008. After his basic training, he completed his Combat Engineer training and then qualified as an electrical and mechanical draughtsman. In September 2010 he started Afghanistan pre-deployment training and additionally excelled at the the General Purpose Machine Gunners' course and completed the Pashtu patrol language course. He was described as a first-rate soldier and a rising star within his squadron With an outgoing nature and vibrant personality, "Bondy" was well-liked among his colleagues and always popular with the ladies.
Spr Bond leaves behind his mother Lizz and father Mark, sisters Kimberley and Bethany, and brothers Isaac and Jose, along with other relatives and friends. The family said, "Elijah Cooper Bond left the world in the way he chose to live his life. He was a beautiful son, amazing brother, a proud uncle and our best friend. From a wicked grin to a righteous smile he could light up a room as much as he lit up our lives, so mischievous and fun yet grounded and down to earth. He will forever be a piece of us and remain in our hearts".
Funeral with full military honours was held on December 22, 2011 at Truro Cathedral.
