BIG STONE GAP, Va. Charles Alan Dickenson, 63, passed away peacefully on Saturday (May 15, 2010) at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and a 1968 graduate of Powell Valley High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of Vietnam, having served in combat from 1968-1970. He worked for 10 years for Westmoreland Coal Company. He was a carpenter by trade and was owner/operator of the Dickenson Construction Company in Big Stone Gap. He was of Baptist faith.

Charles loved bluegrass music and played the guitar, banjo and the mandolin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Bob" Dickenson.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Pat "Trishy" Dickenson; two daughters, Marcie Renea of Big Stone Gap and Amy Alecia Fleming and her husband, Chris, of Telford, Tenn.; four grandchildren who meant the world to Charles, Josh Phillips, Patrick Fleming, Sydney and Olyvia Fleming; mother, Mary Sue Dickenson of East Stone Gap, Va.; five sisters, Wanda Sorah, Pam Stacy, and Etta Pleasant of Big Stone Gap, Sarah Reynolds and Debbie Dickenson of Dryden, Va.; four brothers, Tom Dickenson, Rob Dickenson, Mike Dickenson, all of East Stone Gap, Va. and Jerry Dickenson of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap, Va.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Alan Collier and the Rev. James Holcomb officiating.

Military graveside rites, by local V.F.W. and D.A.V. Posts and the Virginia Army National Guard Honors Team, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday to go in procession.

Pallbearers will be Steve Isabell, Shane Tucker, Dale Tucker, Pete Bowers, Josh Phillips, Patrick Fleming, Billy Austin, Tim Nickodam and Gary Crusenberry.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rocky Cooper, Jack Lawson, Bobby Tucker and Grover Dickenson.

Holding Funeral Home is serving the Dickenson family.
