On October 7, 1929, in Honey Island, MS, Herbert Clark Allen, Sr., was born to the late Nathan Allen, Sr. and Mary Jane Williams Allen. Herbert was the third of six children,three of them preceded him in death, (Charles Van Allen, Sr., Daisy May Haskin, and Nathan Allen, Jr.)
His Life
Growing up in Honey Island, Herbert attended Jones Chapel Elementary School. In 1941 the Allen family moved from Honey Isand to Lampkin, MS, where he continued his education at Rose Hill Church School. On September 23, 1949 he married Nomie Jean Dotson and shared 56 wonderful years together. To their blessed union nine children were born. His passion was farming which he did for fifty plus years. Because of his passion for farming, he was featured in the August 1993 issue of Ebony Magazine.
His Church
Herbert confessed his faith in Christ at and early age. Upon moving to the Lampkin Community he joined Rose Hill M.B. Church, where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. After the church burned, he and his family joined Christian Valley M. B. Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon and Trustee. He was a man of integrity who loved God, people (especially his church family), Sunday school and bible class.
His Legacy
On, Monday, June 19, 2006 at 3:45 a.m., God sent His angel to escort Herbert home. He leaves to honor his memory a loving and devoted wife, Nomie Jean Dotson Allen; three daughters: Mary Jean Hawkins (Raymond) Belzoni, MS; Charlene Anderson(Albert) Silver City, MS; and Grace Younger (Edwin Glenn) Raymond, MS; six sons: Herbert, Jr. (Linda) Silver City, MS; Albert (Cynthia) Gulfport, MS; Clarence (Geraldine) Yazoo City, MS; Carl Earl (Francine) Isola, MS; Freddie (Zina) Silver City, MS; and Michael (Jacqueline) Dacula, GA; an adopted daughter, Gloria Jean Liddell of Belzoni, MS, twenty-nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three sisters: Lorine Gates ( Thester), Bernice Allen, both of Chicago, IL; Lizza Figures, Yazoo City, MS; one brother-in-law, Ellis Haskins, Gulfport, MS; a special nephew Charles Van Allen Jr. (Evelyn), Silver City, MS, one aunt, Mattie Williams of Belzoni, MS; a special cousin Susie Croft (William) Belzoni, MS and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
