Carl Larsson
Birth: May 28, 1853
Death: Jan. 22, 1919

Acclaimed Swedish Artist. He grew up in a poor family in Stockholm, but worked his way up to the top among Swedish artists. He is definitely one of Sweden´s most beloved painters, and reproductions of his art is to be found in many thousands of homes, in Sweden and elsewhere. He had no assets, but he had talent, and with some help he made his way into the Academy of Arts in Stockholm. As a young painter he went to Paris and started out as an illustrator for different magazines and books. But his career met no success. His turning point was when he met his future wife Karin at the Swedish artist colony in Gerz outside Paris. Together they formed an aesthetic partnership. They returned to Sweden and settled eventually down in Sundborn, near Falun in the province of Dalarna. He produced paintings, and she designed the furnishing of the house. Eight children were born, and much of his art describes the family, and the life in Sundborn. Today their home – Carl Larssongården” (The Carl Larsson Estate) is a museum, and in 1997 there was a huge succes at Victoria & Albert Museum in London with an exhibition showing their art and home with designs and decorations. Carl Larsson´s last monumental work, ”Midvinterblot” (Midwinter Sacrifice) is displayed at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. (bio by: Peter Robsahm)
