Death: Jun. 27, 1934
Shelby County
Missouri, USA

Daughter of Robert Kenerday and Mary Margaret "Maggie" Hightower Mayes. First wife of Jesse Butler, married 6 OCT 1933 in Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri. They eloped to Hannibal in Marion county to be married by a Justice of the Peace./Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri.

She was only 19 when she died and had only been married to Jesse Butler for eight months./Shelbina, Shelby, Missouri.

Hunnewell citizens were saddened Wednesday morning when the news came that Mrs. Jesse Butler had passed away at the Furnish hospital at Shelbina at 10:45 o'clock, after an illness of ten weeks. She underwent an operation for appendicitis on April 23, she recovered sufficiently to be brought to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Mayes in this city, and complications developed and she was taken back to the hospital where she submitted to another operation but it was to no avail and in spite of the best medical care and nursing her condition continued to grow worse until the end.

Dorothy Mayes was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Mayes and was born north of Hunnewell, April 22, 1915, and was 19 years and 3 months old, and has lived in this community all her life.

She was united in marriage to Jesse Butler of Lakenan, on October 6, 1933, and they made their home with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Butler until a short time before her illness when they accepted a position in the Collier grocery store here.

She united with the Methodist church a number of years ago and was a member of the Willing Workers' Sunday School Class.

The death of the young wife, daughter and sister has cast a gloom over our town, for Dorothy was one of the loved girls of our town, her sweet and unselfish disposition endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was a typo in this office for two years and we always found her willing to do any task that was before her, so she was in all her short life's work, the things she set out to do she always did cheerfully, oftimes putting aside her own pleasures that she might help a friend.

She was a loving wife, daughter and sister to her husband; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Mayes, and four brothers, Allard and Gerald Mayes, of Moberly, and DeWitt and Billy Mayes of this city, one brother Kenneth, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. E. Mangold and interment will be in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

To the bereaved young husband, parents and brothers is extended the sympathy of the community.
