Artist. He is best known for his depiction of the American West. In 1837 he was commission by Sir Walter Drummond Stewart of Scotland to accompany him on an expedition to the Rocky Mountains. With members of the American Fur Company, the group traveled as far as the Green River Basin. Alfred Jacob Miller recorded the trip, depicting various Indian tribes and wildlife as well as American hunters and trappers. William Drummond Steward returned to the American West in the late 1840's in the company of Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, son of Sacagawea. Following the trip, Alfred Jacob Miller joined Walter Drummond Steward at his home, Murthly Castle in Perthshire, Scotland, where a studio was provided for him. While there, Alfred Miller created oil paintings based on his sketches. One of his most well known works is The Trapper's Bride, and 1845 oil on canvas. While auctions of his work are rate, two recent (2016) auctions for his work realized prices in the $2,000,000 price range.
