| Birth: | Feb. 4, 1740 | | Death: | Feb. 11, 1795 |  Poet. Lived a poor and hard life in Stockholm, which is reflected in his ballads. This poor life meant coming i debt, and he struggled to get his music published. But his luck changed, and he was to get the Swedish king Gustav III to become his benifactor. Many came to see and hear Bellman perform, and his reputation as an entertainer and poet spread. In 1790 his work ”Fredmans Epistlar” (Fredman´s Epistles”) was published, and the year after, ”Fredmans sånger”. The content of these epistles mirrored the social life in Stockholms at this time, with an extended alcoholism and prostitution. 1792 king Gustav III was assasinated, and Bellman lost his protector. 1793 he became a member of Swedish Academy of Music, but his personal problems increased. In June 1794 he was arrested, for unpaid debts and in prison he caugh ill. After being released he never made it back, and he died early 1795 from tuberculosis. (bio by: Peter Robsahm)
