John Kearsley born in county Durham, England, and arrived in Philadelphia in 1711. John was elected to the vestry of Christ church in 1719 and began planning for a larger church. The new building was built between 1727 and 1753. He often paid workers out of his own pocket to keep the construction going. In 1726 he served the province as an elected member of the Pa assembly and was involved in the design and construction of the State house (Independence Hall). Dr. Kearsley was also well known as a physician. He died at age 88, and had left a legacy to establish Christ church hospital, a residence for poor and infirm women, it is now the independent Kearsley retirement community.
