Rape survivor. Cheryl was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She was well known for the trial of the Big Dan's tavern gang rape in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1983. The 1988 film "The Accused" is based on her story. After the trial in New Bedford, Araujo relocated to Miami with her boyfriend and daughters to escape the publicity and ostracism. She was killed in a car accident while driving her daughters to a Christmas show in December of 1986.
