| Birth: | 1830 | | Death: | 1900 Pine Ridge Shannon County South Dakota, USA | Oglala Chief. Born Tasunka Kokipapi which roughly translates to ‘the man of whose horse we are afraid' meaning that the bearer of the name was so feared in battle that the mere sight of his horse inspired fear. During the Red Cloud War of 1866, he was one of the leading lieutenants for Red Cloud. After the peace of 1868, however, he lived at the Oglala agency and strongly advocated peace with the Americans. He was made President of the Pine Ridge Indian Council and made several trips to Washington, D.C. where he served as a negotiator with the Americans. His efforts helped aid the transition to reservation life and were instrumental after the massacre at Wounded Knee when he helped negotiate a fairer treatment of the Sioux than many thought possible. He died at Pine Ridge at abut age 70. (bio by: Iola)
