Persian King. Born: 550 BC, Died: 486 BC Darius I, "Darius the Great," was the son of a provincial governor in Persia named Hystapses. He was elected king by Persian nobles and reigned from 522 to 486 BC. Darius had to deal with several troubles in establishing his reign, mostly revolts. He made many improvements to Persian administration, reforming taxtation, setting up a postal service, and building roads. Susa became his administrative capital in 521 and had a place both there and at Persepolis. Darius conquered Thrace, Macedonia, and the islands of Lemnos and Imbros, among others. Although his campaigns against the Scythians failed, he attempted to conquer Greece after Athens and Eretria supported a revolt of the Ionian Greeks against Persia. His first exedition failed when his fleet was lost, and the second ended in his defeat at the Battle of Marathon. (bio by: Mongoose)
