Mary Louise McPherson Hackett was the third of three children born to John McPherson (1826-1886) and his wife Pamelia Allen (1820-1912). Her father was a native of Scotland who worked variously as a farmer and mason in Port Huron, St. Clair Co., MI. Mary Louise graduated from Port Huron High School on June 24, 1880. On August 29, 1883 she married Fred Nathan Hackett (1861-1937) in Port Huron. The couple moved to Detroit where Fred worked as a traveling salesman, specializing in saddlery and hardware. They raised three children: Ada Ruth (b. 1885), Lewis Frank (b. 1888), and Mildred (b. 1894). In December 1906 Mary Louise underwent surgery for cancer, but died shortly afterwards from a postoperative infection--all too common in the days before modern antiseptic medicine.
