Mary was the daughter of William Dixon "Billy D" Hayter and Jane Evans. Her father was a merchant at New Market in Madison County, Alabama. The family moved to the Republic of Texas in 1842 and settled in Madison County, where she met and married James Jackson Boyd. At the time of her death Mary, widowed, was living with daughter Bettie Boyd Jones in Gainesville, but she died in Hunt County while visiting daughter Dora Boyd Braly. Mary bore the name of her great grandmother Abigal Estill. See the book, "The Pioneering Roots of James Jackson Boyd and Mary Abigal Hayter".
