Ralph E. DeWeese, a high school graduate, enlisted in the National Guard in Shenandoah, IA on 10 February 1941.

He was subsequently sent to Officer Candidate School (OCS) and emerged as a 2nd Lt. As a parachutist volunteer he was assigned to Company H, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment

Ralph jumped into Normandy in the D-Day invasion of France, 6 June 1944. He and the regiment survived 33 days of combat without relief.

On 17 September 1944, 1st Lieutenant DeWeese parachuted into the vicinity of Nijmegan, Holland. He was killed in action at Torensche Molen (Mill), Holland on 23 September 1944. He was initially buried in a field grave near the mill.

On 18 July 1945, he was re-buried in the U. S. Temporary Cemetery, Molenhoek Netherlands, in grave KK-9-222.

When the permanent Margraten American Cemetery was opening, his family elected to repatriate his remains and he now rests in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa.

The following appears in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa book, page 281. In the cemetery, Second Addition: "Block 12 Lot 7 - Ralph Eugene DeWeese, born 7 July 1918 Page County, IA, died 23 Sep 1944 Holland, [at age 26y 2m 16d, WWII 1st Lieut. Iowa 508 PRCHT Inf 82 ABN Div; father Homer H. DeWeese mother Mabel Natalee Albers.
