She married Richard Virgil Bolton June 1st, 1927, their daughter Margaret Berneice was born September 5th, 1928. Margaret went by Berneice, her father specifically wanted her name spelled the way he saw it when he was in France during the war.
Richard Edgar Bolton, their son, was born July 23rd, 1934. Anna Mae Bolton was born September 26th, 1938 and my mother, Gertrude "Virgene" Bolton was born August 14th, 1944.
On October 5th, 1961 Berneice was shot and killed by her husband, Elijah Wilson Roach. She notified the Sheriff that her husband had threatened to kill her and she was afraid for her life. She asked her friends, Helen and Monid Good, if she could stay with them for a few days, Wilson came over to talk her into coming home, when she said she wasn't coming home she turned around to re-enter the house and he shot her 4 times. Wilson then drove home, got out of the truck and told his neighbor, Connie Pipers, that he had just killed his wife and that he was going to kill himself. He walked around to the back of the house and put the gun in his mouth and fired.
Ida's brother Arthur died in a car accident October 19th, 1961, he was born in 1907, they were very close.
Richard Virgil Bolton went with the family to visit his daughter Virgene in Sandusky, Ohio after having her first child born the 26th of August, 1960. He decided to return home alone because he wasn't feeling well. His daughter, Anna Mae, drove down three days later and found him on the floor, he had had a stroke. He was taken to the VA Hospital in Huntington, WV where he stayed until a few weeks before he died, December 5th, 1961. It is unknown if he was aware of Berneice's death by her husband.
In 1971 Virgene was attempting to divorce her abusive husband for the second time, she had gone into hiding with her children in Columbus, Ohio. He found us and wanted to take the three older children trick or treating for Halloween. He brought the kids home that night and returned around midnight, broke into the home and beat her to death. He said he would never give her a divorce.
Ida Bolton, my granny, had a lot of sadness in her life, as did I, we shared a quiet love for each other and I admire her deeply.
