Harry was the son of Edward and Sarah McGill Evertz. He was born on October 23, 1882 in Newark, NJ. He had three sisters, Edna May, who was born on June 21, 1884, Jessie who was born on June 19, 1890, and Alvina (named after his mother), who was born in 1900. According to the 1900 census Harry lived at home with his parents along with Jessie and Edna, Alvina probably wasn‘t yet born. His father was a butcher, his sister, Edna, was a bookkeeper and Harry was a clerk with the railroad. In 1904 Harry married Florence Gray. Florence was born June 1883 in Connecticut, her mother, May was born February 1859 in New Jersey as was her father and Florence's sister, Alice E., was born September 1881. In 1900 May Gray was a music teacher and widow. By 1910 Harry and Florence had two children Harry Alexander II, who was born on June 21, 1907 and Alice (probably named after Florence‘s sister), who was born on February 28, 1909. Harry was a mechanical engineer and Florence was a teacher. World War I started in 1917 and Harry registered for the draft. At the time he worked for Edison Lamp Works. In 1920 Harry and Florence lived in Newark next door to his mother, Sarah (60 yrs) and two sisters Edna May (31 yrs) who did clerical work for a chemist and Alvina (20 yrs) who also did clerical work. His mother was a widow and his sisters were single. Harry and Florence now had another son, Edward, who was born on January 30, 1913. Later Harry worked as a mechanical engineer for General Electric. By 1930 Harry Sr. was a building contractor.
In 1942 Harry registered for the draft, he was 59 and livng at 248 N. 9th St in Newark. He listed his sister, Mrs. Edna Barker as the person to contact. Probably because he and his wife were living separately in different towns. At some point Harry lived in Cedar Grove, NJ.
