U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. After graduating from the Central Normal College in 1897, he graduated from the law department of DePauw University in 1900, was admitted to the bar, and commenced to practice law in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Entering politics, he was a member of the Oklahoma State Senate (1907 to 1920). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth and Sixty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1927. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1927 to 1951). He also served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army and was assigned to military intelligence during World War II. After leaving politics, he practiced law and lived in retirement until his death.
