In 1925, after the sudden death of his father, he moved, with his mother, from his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, to Los Angeles, California. Following his father's footsteps he became a successful insurance salesman, becoming the largest fire underwriter in the state. During World War II he moved to Washington D.C. to work in the Pentagon as a chief expediter for the United States Navy. In 1945, he returned to Los Angeles and took advantage of the booming housing market by putting together the largest savings and loan business in the United States. In 1952 he established the Ahmanson Foundation which gave millions of dollars to medical, cultural and educational causes in Los Angeles. (bio by: Bigwoo)
