| Birth: | Apr. 27, 1924 Berkeley Alameda County California, USA | | Death: | Oct. 29, 2003 Rocklin Placer County California, USA | Internationally known pianist and orchestral and opera composer. He studied with opera composer Gian Carlo Menotti at the Curtis Institute of Music at Philadelphia, later working as his assistant. He composed his first opera in 1954, "The Mother." This grew into a trilogy of one-act operas which were "The Selfish Giant" and "Harrison Loved His Umbrella." Mr. Hollingsworth loved teaching. From 1961 to 1963 he taught at San Jose State College. In 1976, he joined the Oakland University Department of Music, Theater, and Dance as a teacher of composition, music theory, and orchestration. I had the pleasure of taking one of his classes in orchestration. In 1993 he retired as professor emeritus. (bio by: Mike)
