Derek Ervin Smith
Birth: Nov. 1, 1961
Death: Aug. 9, 1996

Professional Basketball Player, "High Five" creator. He played as a starting forward for Louisville's 1980 NCAA championship team. During his nine year professional basketball career, he played for the San Diego and Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics. The year before his death, he worked as an assistant coach with the Washington Bullets. Sports legend states that Smith, while a player for Louisville, originated the term "High Five" (slapping hands in the air with another person). Following his death, the Derek Smith All Stars basketball team (part of the The Kentucky Basketball Foundation) was established. There is also a memorial golf tournament and a shootout tournament bearing his name. (bio by: Evening Blues)
