World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the Black Watch, Royal Highlanders. At Istabulat, Iraq, on April 21, 1917, Private Melvin's Company was held down in the trenches by enemy rifle and machine gunfire. Private Melvin on his own, rushed over open ground killing two enemy. With the others in the trench continuing to fire at him he jumped in and attacked them with his bayonet in his hand. He succeeded in killing two more, disarming eight unwounded and one wounded. He hustled them out of the trench and marched them back to his lines and delivered them over to an officer. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in November 1917. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
