Birth: 1844
Tennessee, USA
Death: Sep. 2, 1878
Collierville
Shelby County
Tennessee, USA

First victim of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878 in Collierville, TN. Merritt Brown had been a soldier in the Wigfall Grays, the regiment of Confederate soldiers from Collierville. At the time of his death, Brown was employed as a Railroad Agent. Even though the epidemic was raging through Memphis just a few miles away, it is possible that he contracted the disease while working before any quarantine was in effect. (His birthdate was estimated from the 1850 census; therefore, he was about 34 years old at the time of his death.)
