Macomber served as the United States Ambassador to Jordan from 1961 to 1964, and United States Ambassador to Turkey from 1973 to 1977. He served in the administrations of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President Lyndon Baines Johnson, President Richard Milhous Nixon, President Dwight David Eisenhower, and President Gerald Ford. In 1978 he left the government to become the first full-time President of the Metropolitan Art Gallery in New York City until his retirement in 1986. In 1975 Macomber wrote the book, "The Angels'Game: A Handbook Of Modern Diplomacy." (bio by: K)
