Jim was born in Columbia, South Carlonia, son of the late James Duncan Wells and Marguerite Whitlock Wells Rogers.
Growing up in Columbia, Jim came to Clemson College (University) to play football under Coach Frank Howard. He graduated with a degree in Architecture. He moved to Greenville after graduation to join the architectural firm that became Freeman, Wells and Major Architects, PA. He practiced architecture until his retirement. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his son, Dr. James Duncan Wells, III and his wife, Joye of Charleston and his daughter, Laura Wells Huff and her husband, Jay of Greenville and his daughter, Sherrie Elizabeth Wells of Greenville. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth Huff, Austin Patricia Huff, Logan Wells Huff, Melanie Catherine Wells and Jared James Wells; as well as his brother, Joel Whitlock Wells of Greenville.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Remembrance Chapel Mausoleum in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in Remembrance Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association , 3535 Pelham Road, suite 101, Greenville, SC 29615 or St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 701 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC. 29601.
