Dempsey T. Johnson served two tours of duty during the Civil War. In August 1863 he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company I, 10th Georgia Cavalry and served until 28 February 1864 when he was discharged at Rome, Georgia. In August 1864 he enlisted as a private in Company C, Bells Battalion in Newnan, Georgia and served until surrender. He was paroled in May 1865 in Atlanta, Georgia.
