Barnet Louis Finkelstein was the son of Jacob Pistchalsky and Sarah (Rubin) Pistchalska. "Finkelstein" was the name adopted by one of his sons when he came to the US.

Barnet's original name (Yiddish) was Berko (diminutive of Ber, "bear") Leib ("lion") Pistchalsky. His Hebrew name was Dov ("bear") Yehudah (= Judah; "praise") ben Yaakov.

Barnet's first wife was Celia Goldstein; their child was Sime Kaplan.

Barnet's second wife was Anna Hirsch; their children were Ida Raskin, Jacob Finkelstein, Ecy (or Esse) Finkelstein, and Joseph Finkelstein. (Jacob, Ecy and Joseph used Finkel later on.)

Barnet's third wife was Yetta Segal; their children were Gussie Finkelstein, Lillie Beckelman, and Joseph (Janus) Finkelstein. (Gussie and Joseph used Finkel later on.) Yetta had two daughters, Anna Dwore and Rose Finkelstein, from her prior marriage to Jacob Bedkofsky.
