In the First World War, he served as a Lance-Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment. On April 29, 1917, his unit was in a forward advance against German lines at Oppy, France. Lance-Corporal Welch entered an enemy trench killing one man, then armed with an empty revolver, he chased four of the enemy in the open and captured them single-handed. Manning the enemy machine-gun for over five hours, he more than once went into the open, exposed to heavy fire, to collect ammunition to keep his guns in action, until wounded by a shell. For fearless devotion to duty in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and promoted Sergeant. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
