Born in Germany and immigrated to the United States ~1891-1893. According to family history, he was born in the Harz Mountain district and crossed the ocean as a stow-away. By the same history, he served in the Boer War and the Spanish American War. Although neither claim is substantiated today, he is buried in the Spanish-American War section of Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Settled in St. Louis, Missouri before 1900. Married Elizabeth Weber ca. 1904, when she was 15 y.o. and had been living in Ford City, Pennsylvania with her family.
Father of Charles Schaefer, Josephine Schaefer Wood and Minna Schaefer Gude.
