EAST LIVERPOOL - Police Chief Michael W. "Mike" McVay, whose lifetime of service to the East Liverpool community will long be remembered and appreciated, passed away suddenly at 12:39 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, in the Emergency Room at East Liverpool City Hospital, after taking ill suddenly at his home.
McVay, who was 62, was surrounded at the time of his death by his family and his fellow police officers.
He was born here on Dec. 20, 1948, a son of Wilma Jacqueline "Jackie" Schneibel McVay of East Liverpool, and the late Carl McVay, who passed away in 1997.
A 1966 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Mike went on to receive his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Kent State University, then attended the Police Academy at Jefferson Technical College. He later earned a Masters degree in Criminal Justice from Youngstown State University and was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
In 1994, he became the 13th police chief in the city's history. Only one other chief, Hugh McDermott, who served from 1916-1948, had a longer tenure.
Mike was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in East Liverpool. He also belonged to the Elks Lodge 258 and had been a member of the Ohio Police Chiefs Association and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 at one time.
Surviving him at home is his devoted wife, Connie L. McVay, whom he married in 1984.
Two beloved daughters also survive: Lauren E. McVay and her fiance, Larry Higgins, of East Palestine, and Hannah Dickey of East Liverpool
One brother, Donald P. McVay of Waynesboro, Pa,, survives, as well as his nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much.
Mike will also be missed by his faithful canine companion, Molly.
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Monday, where the family will be present from 2 to 8 p.m. An F.O.P. service will take place at 7 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Mark Blakeley of the 1st Christian Church in Wellsville officiating.
Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.
