Martha married Sanford R. Moss in 1876. She was the daughter of Thomas Thornberg who came to Madison county from Ohio and for years was the owner and operator of a farm in Richland township.

At the time of the death of her brother, Richard Thornberg, Mr. Moss and Martha adopted one of the latter's children, Thomas, which they reared and who is now a resident of Texas.
