J.T. Gwaltney, 91, of Carmi, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb 29, 2004 at White County Medical Center Skilled Care Unit.
Mr. Gwaltney was born May 31, 1912 on the family farm in Mill Shoals Township, the son of James and Josephine "Josie" (Funkhouser) Gwaltney. He married Helen Darnell of Crossville on Oct. 15, 1945 and she preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 2002. Mr. Gwaltney was included in the eighth generation of Gwaltneys living in America of Welsh ancestry. He was a retired farmer, grocery store owner/operator and public servant. He was active in Mill Shoals Township politics for many years, serving in five different positions; supervisor, clerk, assessor, auditor and trustee. He was White County treasurer for four years and he served on the White County Board of Review for eight years. He raised registered Hereford cattle and Hampshire hogs and showed the animals at county fairs throughout Southern Illinois. In the 1960's Mr. Gwaltney purchased and operated Funkhouser Grocery Store in Mill Shoals. In the 1970's he purchased Horste Market in Grayville and continued producing and selling the Horste German sausage and bologna each weekend.
Mr. Gwaltney was a member of Mill Shoals Baptist Church and in recent years he continued to attend the Mill Shoals area community worship services.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Pyle of Carmi; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda (Seibert) Gwaltney of Carmi; three grandchildren, Jay Pyle, Luke Pyle and Jonathan Gwaltney and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, an infant Daughter, Ruth Ann; a son Jimmie Dale, who was a science teacher and coach at Carmi-White County High School and 12 brothers and sisters, Henry, Clarence, Julia, Rosetta, Franklin, Jennings, Lawrence, Paul, Emma, Lee, Earnest and Marie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Tuesday at Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi, the Rev. Lyman Greer officiating. Burial will be at Burnt Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7pm today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the White County Senior Citizens Center in Carmi, or to the physical therapy and activities department at the White County Medical Center Skilled Care Unit.
