Cooper was the son of Frank P. and Sarah May (Powell) Nace. He had siblings Harold, Cora, and Mildred. He married Edith Margaret Russell in 1934. He studied theology at Princeton Seminary and Temple University. He was a minister. They had a son and four daughters were; Susan (Nace) James, Marguerite S. (Nace) Winzinger, Dorothy (Nace) Bowen (Dr Dorothy Bowen came to Eastern Kentucky University after having spent 30 years in Kenya. The original motivation for all those years in Kenya was her desire, from a very young age, to be involved in missionary work. She recently retired) and Carolyn (Nace) Szalkowski.
